Sonia Cabano is an accomplished food writer, cook and very entertaining showchef living in Cape Town.

She’s best known as the presenter of the popular food programme, ‘Pampoen tot Perlemoen’ , 4 series (36 episodes) of which were broadcast from 2002 until 2008 on KYKnet and SABC3.

She ran a very successful catering business in Cape Town for 5 years, during which she cooked for numerous high-profile media and corporate clients including Italian Vogue, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, Margaret Thatcher and Icon Villas.

During this time Sonia also worked as a freelance stylist and journalist for various South African publications including Woolworths Taste, Conde Nast House and Garden, VISI, Insig and Sarie, covering topics from food, frontpage celebrity interviews and interiors in both English and Afrikaans.

Sonia has published three cookbooks to date and is currently writing her fourth, a vegetarian cookbook for the South African lifestyle. Share your ideas with her on her vegetarian blog http://lusciousvegetarian.wordpress.com/

Her newest book, ‘Relish: Easy Sauces, Seasonings and Condiments to make at home’, is published September 2011 by RHS. The Afrikaans title is ‘Pikant’ and both are sold nationwide as well as via Kalahari.com.

Sonia’s vivacious and humorous, hands-on approach to cooking in live demonstrations is much sought after by corporate clients, who value her ability to convey information in an entertaining and practical way.

Private clients value her passion, commitment and creativity.

She has appeared at Good Food & Wine Shows in Cape Town and Gauteng, Cultivaria, The Natural and Organic Show and numerous smaller events to great acclaim.

Sonia has done many live television broadcasts, as a presenter for Ontbytsake and as a guest cook on SABC3’s morning show Expresso.

For passionate foodies and beginners alike, Sonia gives private cooking classes, does cooks’ tours and organises food-and-wine pairing events on request. She is available for bookings as private chef to select clients.

Recipe development and menu consultancy are part of her portfolio of skills.

Sonia Cabano is well-known to be a passionate champion of local artisan producers and strives to bring the message across of living in harmony with nature, supporting and respecting the honest smaller regional producers who are writing South Africa’s culinary history and celebrating local food and wine.

“I love cooking because I love life, and I love people,” Sonia says. “Making and sharing delicious food is the best way I know to celebrate the joy of being alive. Sharing food unites people and it helps us discover and honour our common values.

“South African cooking is a wonderful expression of our lively culture, I think, a rich and powerful stream fed by many diverse tributaries – Dutch, Malay, French, German, British, Jewish, Greek, Portuguese, Indian and African. And all these tastes and flavour-accents can be clearly discerned in our own local culinary language, making South African cuisine a true polyglot with a unique and distinctive voice.”

“My approach to cooking is simple: fresh, seasonal and local, ethically produced and organic where at all possible. Use the best ingredients you can afford, and do as little as possible to them. Food should taste of itself and offer a feast to the senses.

Make 2011 your year of celebrating South Africa’s unique culinary heritage by featuring Sonia Cabano at your next event or celebration, or book a cooks’ tour and cooking class with her.
